Eroica California

I was back again this year to attend one of my favorite cycling events, Eroica California. This year the event shifted to a new venue on the coast in the little town of Cambria California. For those of you not familiar with the Eroica concept it is a gathering of vintage cycling enthusiasts who then ride their classic bikes on a challenging mixed surface route. It is the original gravel grinder type of event!

This year I again rode the 89 mile coastal route which features most of the best elements of the event. It is challenging, scenic and well supported, and this year we were going to experience and added element, one that is every riders dream! This would be the biggest year yet with around 1100 riders!

This is the third year for this event…….

Riders gathered for the 7:00 start wave.

In all of my previous Eroica events I have always ridden the longest available route. I wanted to get the full “Heroic” experience out of each location, Italy, England, Spain as well as California. This year however I chose one of the shorter distance options which may have marked a turning point in my cycling.

The day is finally here, and Eroica California is on! Approximately 700 riders have signed up for one of the three routes, a 40 mile short course, a 65 mile route and of course the 127 mile long route. My frequent riding partner Bob and I will be riding the long route.

Today was a good day. I brought my old motorbike over to the concours of bicycles and hung out for a while. I hooked up with Bob, my riding buddy from Utah and we chatted with lots of people over the next hour or two. Andreas who works for Brooks, Nicola who is with the L’Eroica group from Italy and Tim from L’Eroica Britannia. All very interesting people who were wonderful to talk to about their passion for the sport.

After arriving last night, today was about getting out and seeing a bit of the area, on a bike! I was able to do a bit of a pre-ride on the first 30 miles of the route and what I can say at this point is that it is a spectacular course. It will also be a challenging route which traverses endless rolling hills, punctuated by some dirt roads as well as some real climbs. Heroic is definitely an appriopriate adjective for this event.

Registration just opened this morning and I am in. I’ll be doing the long route which is 123 miles with approximately 9500 feet of climbing, over half of which will be on dirt roads. The bike I will be using is my L’Eroica Britannia veteran 1962 Legnano Gran Premio. It will be mostly original for this ride and will certainly meet the standards of an historic bike!
